Deep within the mesmerizing rolling meadows, lived a shepherd boy. His being was unadulterated, simple, and honest. His primary duty was essentially to care for his herd of sheep.
Their gentle baas and the rustling here of the wind among the solo tree on the hilltop were his constant associates. Day in day, guarding his wards imbued in him a sense of calm satisfaction.
But, there were at times moments of isolation, when the shepherd boy would pine for company. In one such instance because of sheer boredom, the shepherd boy devised a mischievous plan.
Stories of wild beasts hunting on sheep had been heard times and again in the hamlet. So, the boy chose to used this fear and played a prank on the inhabitants.
One afternoon he raced into the village screaming “Wolf! There is a wolf that has taken my sheep!” The terrified villagers rushed up the hills to help but found no beast.
The boy laughed at the puzzle on their faces. This game laughed for a couple of more days. Yet, one morning, a real wolf did come to prey the herd. The shepherd boy raced for help, shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one came.
Frustrated and alone, the boy battled against the wolf but managed to rescue only few of his sheep. Heartbroken, he returned to the village only to be met with a scolding on honesty and the results of false alarms.
His tale of this shepherd boy has been handed down generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the importance of honesty, the consequences of lying and the dangers of false alarms. Moreover, it stresses how trust once violated, is hard to reclaim. It's a story as appropriate today as it was anciently.
